YOUNGEST EVER KEIRIN WORLD CHAMPION
On 1 October, 2001, he became the youngest world champion in the history of the keirin event at the age of 18 years. He was only one of two riders able to stay on his bike after a major collision and crossed the line ahead of Frenchman Laurent Gane as the other four competitors came down in a heap in the final lap. German great Jens Fiedler managed to pull himself up and run with his bike to the line for third, but France's Olympic champion Florian Rousseau was carried off on a stretcher and South Australian Jobie Dajka was disqualified for dangerous riding.

He hadn't even expected to make the final - "I was really surprised and pretty happy about myself when I made it to the final alone and just win it is absolutely awesome. My coach John Beasley just said 'lead it out, if you lead it out no-one's going to come round you'. I did that and no one did, so it worked out really well," he said. (smh.com.au 02/10/01)
